ICE SKATING AT MOUNT HARPER
♦ FIGURE TESTS AND HANDICAP RACES The first ice-skating competition under the auspices of the New Zealand Skating Association was held at Mount Harper during the week-end. Although fairly easy the figure-skating test comprised two of the figures which are part of the bronze medal test. Maximum points were 52. Results were as follows: Women’s test —Miss M. B. Cassie (Tekapo Ice Skating Club), 43 points, 1; Miss M. A. Cassie (Tekapo), 40 points, 2; Mrs H. T. Richards and Miss J. Richards (Windwhistle Winter Sports Club), 38 points (equal) 3. There were eight competitors. Men’s test —O. P. Bayley (Windwhistle), 43 points, 1; Bertril Hjelmstrom (Windwhistle), 37 points, 2; M. Bott (Timaru Roller Skating Club), 22 points, S. Men’s Half-mile Handicap Race—B. Hjelmstrom (Windwhistle) 1, E. A. Allan (Mount Harper) 2, O. P. Bayley (Windwhistle) 3. They all started from scratch. Allan and Bayley made a desperate effort to catch the winner, but were not able to do so. Women’s - Quarter-mile Handicap Race—Miss M. B. Cassie 1, Miss M. A. Cassie (Tekapo) 2, Miss J. Richards (Windwhistle) 3. They all started from scratch. The president of the association (Mr H. T. Richards) presented the prizes. He thanked Mr and Mrs W. E. Barker for placing the ice area at the disposal of the association. Mr Richards also acknowledged the donation of prizes for the figure skating by Mr Waino Sarelius, who was the judge, and of other gifts.
