Money for Public Buildings SUMS NEEDED IN CANTERBURY West Coast, Nelson, And Marlborough [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, July 26. Large sums are voted in the Public Works Estimates for expenditure on new public buildings in and nea~ Christchurch, the chief of which for the new railway station, courthouse, and post office. For the railway station and the rearrangement of the yards and terminus facilities, the total cost of which is now estimated at £724,000, the. sum of £103,000 has been voted for 193839. Altogether £30,194 had been spent on this work at March 31 this year, the expenditure last year . being £19,660 out of a vote of £75,000. For the “No. 1 block” of the post office, now in construction in Hereford street, £60,000 is on the estimates, compared with £25,000 voted a year ago, of which £19,000 has been spent. The total cost of this block is estimated at £113.000. On account of the “No. 2 block.” the mam post office, £SOO is voted. Nothing has yet been spent on this block, which is expected to cost £200.000. Another £IOOO is on the estimates for the Post and Telegraph Department’s store and workshops in the having been spent of the £IOOO votea last year for this work, which will cost £35,000. The total cost of the buildings is estimated at £220,000. At the Central Police Station work costing £2OOO is provided for, compared with a vote o £9OOO last year, which remained unspent—£2o,ooo is the amount estimated as necessary to complete the W Under e the head of mentol hospital buildings approximately £25,000 isset aside for Sunnyside an^ o The largest' items are £3710 tor the kitchen and ,a. new oven at Sunnyside, and £3600 for the water supply at Templeton. For “alterations, etc.. to the Skelton, Frostick buildings in Hereford street £6OOO is provided, which’is considered sufficient to finish the work, after an expenditure to date of £24,316. For the St. Helens Hospital, Christchurch, £7500 is set aside forthe purchase of additional land and £IOOO tor the building of the new hospital. The estimated total cost of the hospital is £75,000.
