MR G. CUTHBERTSON

[THE PRESS Special Servlce.l ’ OAMARU, July 26. The death of Mr George Lyon Cuthbertson, aged 62, occurred at the Dunedin Hospital after, an operation. Mr Cuthbertson was the engineer to the , Waitaki County Council and was one of the ...ost familiar figures in both town and country, his long service with the council causing him to be very . well known.. Mr Cuthbertson was born at Otahau, Southland, and was a member of a very well-known Southland family. He received his education at the Southland High School. He qualified as a surveyor at Invercargill and served with Mr Duncan MacPherson for several years. He married Miss Sheila Macdonald, and about 1902 went to Clyde, staying there till about 1908, when he returned to Invercargill 'and started practice as a surveyor on his own account. Irt 1915 Mr Cuthbertson accepted a position as engineer to the Waitaki County Council at Oamaru, remaining in that position until his death. As a youth Mr Cuthbertson was a fine footballer and athlete. He was a keen rower and was a member of the Invercargill Rowing Club and was widely knmvn throughout Otago and Southfor his skill in cycle racing. In tips sport he won several important races and represented Southland ■gainst Otago in the days of provincial cycle racing. In Central Otago he was a representative, tennis player. At Oamaru he took up bowling and was f thcniber of the Meadbwbank Bowling Club. During the last 30 years his ail-absorbing Viobby, and. one in which he achieved considerable distinction, y 2f as . He was a member of the North Otago Golf Club and holder of the North Otago' championship title on occasions - and ajso the Invercar«Ul and Southland championship +u For many years he attended me New Zealand golf championships. ■ The qualifications of Mr Cuthbertson ki surveyor and draughtsman enat)led him to carry out much work of a . unportant nature in the county, “ in this direction he willingly gave assistance to local organisations. He was responsible for the designs and Plans of several modern concrete bridges in the county and undertook plans and specifications of the rt?. . highway through the county, wmch has now been sealed. This year, also, he prepared plans for the deviations and formation of the PukeuriJ&urow highway, which is now being sealed.

_ AUCKLAND, July 26. rile death occurred at Wellington to-day of Mrs Hose Blair, wife of the Hon. Mr Justice Blair. Mrs Blair, who was 63 years of age, was born in Auckland, and until her marriage lived in Orakei road, Remu•fa. She was the fourth daughter of •e late Mr Samuel Jackson, one of the original partners of the firm of «4e#son. and Russell, barristers and

solicitors, which later became Jackson. Russell, Tunks, and West. A few years after her marriage she went to Wellington to live. Mrs Blair returned to New Zealand last January after a visit to England and the Continent. She was present at the Coronation. She is survived by three daughters— Mrs Joan Hutton, of London, and Mrs lan Miles and Mrs Freeman Bell, both of Wellington.
