RUGBY FOOTBALL

APPOINTMENT OF REFEREES UNIFORMITY URGED BY UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE’S DECISION The management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union decided last evening not to agree to the proposal of the South Canterbury Union that the latter body’s referee appointment board be allowed to appoint the referee for the match between Canterbury and South Canterbury at Timaru this year. The committee had previously referred the South Canterbury Union’s proposal back for information regarding the constitution of the referees’ appointment board. The reply was that the board consisted of three members, one each appointed by the union, the referees’ association, and the players. It was decided to advise the South Canterbury Union that the usual method of appointment should be followed this season. The Canterbury union, however, was prepared to support a move for uniformity of appointment by. this method at the next annual meeting of the Nfew Zealand Rugby Union. , , ~ Permission was granted for the annual high schools’ match between Christchurch and Waitaki to be played at Lancaster Park on August 3.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON STATEMENT RESENTED “AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE” Strong exception was taken by Mr C. Sweeney, at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association last night, to a published statement by a member of the Wellington Football Association. Mr Sweeney said that the committee had been accused of “messing up the fixtures when it submitted alternative dates for a cup match with the Wellington Football Assoelation. “It is an absolute disgrace to nave statements like that published In. the newspapers,*' said Mr Sweeney. we take our seats on this committee in the interests of the game, and I think it is an insult to the association when such remarks are made. Wellington seems to have a superiority complex which is certainly not good for the game as a whole. The chairman (Mr J. G. Parry): The best way to cope with that sort ox thing is to Ignore it. In any case it is only, one man’s opinion. . Mr J. Adams said that alternative dates had been submitted for the financial good of the Wellington Association. Mr H. Moore: There is no doubt that people who saw that report are under the impression that this committee is guilty of bad management, and it is only right that the matter should be cleared up. The chairman said that the matter should be dealt with through the New Zealand Football Association. “We submitted dates and they were turned down and no reasons were given. h^t S was decided to inform the New Zealand Association that the committee took exception to the remarks made.
