RETURNED SOLDIERS' BALL

FUNCTION AT METHVEN The Methven sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held its annual ball in the Town Hall. The hall was decorated with streamers and coloured lights, and silhouettes of scenes from the front made by Mr A. R. Gourley. Music was played by Cook's orchestra, and extras by Mesdames L. L. Richards, R. F. Smith, and A. S. Kenney. The president (Mr L. L. Richards), for the Returned Soldiers’ Association, welcomed those present. Mr A. Gadd, assisted by Mr R. J. L. Duff, was master of ceremonies.

The supper arrangements were in the hands of Mrs Graham Johns, assisted by daughters of returned soldiers. Mesdames L. L. Richards and E. A. Mangin sang duets, Mrs A. S. Kennedy being accompanist.

ASHBURTON DEBATE HIGH SCHOOL BEATS CATHOLIC CLUB Debating on the subject. “That the establishment of the British Commonwealth of Nations is the first step towards the disintegration of the Empire,” High School beat the Catholic Club in a fixture held under the auspices of the Ashburton County Debating Union on Saturday evening at High School. Mr E. J. Wood presided. The High School team, which took the affirmative, was Messrs M. Watson, H. Kennedy, and W. Lowery, and the Catholic Club team was Messrs J. Bradley. N. Tully, and J. , Gorman. High School won by 223 points to 199. Mr D. A. Bird was the judge.

RUGBY UNION POSTPONEMENT OF MATCHES CRITICISED The action of the Ashburton Rugby Union officials in postpmxing the competitions because of rain on Saturday was criticised by Mr Andrew Doig (vice-president), at the meeting last evening of the management committee. Mr Doig said he thought that the matches were postponed rather hastily on Friday. •T saw the grounds at the domain on Saturday morning and again in the aftex-noon. and they were covered with several sheets of water,” said the president (Mr N. Robilliard), who presided.

Mr Doig said football was played :.t Rakaia on Saturday afternoon. Mr A. Thomson: You could not play footoall on the Ashburton domain on Saturday. The Rakaia Football Club wrote requesting that a senior gx-ade game be arranged at Rakaia next Saturday because the Rakaia Women's Hockey Club had been granted a closed day at the Rakaia domain, and had offered half the proceeds of the gate to the Football Club. FINE OF £25 IMPOSED LICENCE CANCELLED FOR TWO YEARS A fine of £25 was imposed on Hector Claude McDonald, a pharmacist, on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. at the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court, before Messrs A. H. Fenn and S. Andrew, Justices of the Peace, yesterday. Defendant’s licence was also cancelled, and he was prohibited from obtaining another before July 1. 1940. Sergeant J. F. Cleary said defendant was arrested by Constable T. W. Round in company with Traffic Inspector W. G. Letham, on Saturday afternoon. The car was being driven in an erratic manner. Defendant failed to stop in Grigg street when the inspector signalled for him to do so, but eventually pulled up in Peter street. Two bottles of beer and a partially-consumed bottle of whisky were found in the car. Defendant was examined by a doctor at the police station. The doctor’s certificate was produced by Sergeant Cleary.

Defendant pleaded guilty. For the defence. Mr V. W. Russell said McDonald was of a highly-strung temperament. He had ordered the liquor and had gone to see a friend. It could be seen from the bottle that not much liquor had been consumed. Defendant had not been well lately. After leaving the room at his friend’s house he went out into the cold, and the liquor had affected him.
