CANTERBURY TITLES

SUCCESSFUL MEETING HELD

LARGE ENTRIES IN ALL EVENTS

The twenty-sixth annual Canterbury miniature rifle championships were held on Saturday. Forty-six teams competed in the champion teams' match, and nearly 200 individual entries were received in the championship series. A large number-of country teams competed, representing clubs throughout Canterbury, South Canterbury, North Canterbury, and North Otago. • The Roberts six-bull targets were used throughout, and ties In all matches were decided by the number of inner bulls registered. The Canterbury championship was won by C. Burford (Hanmer), who was the only competitor to score a double possible. The individual match was won by C. Timbrell (Sumner), who scored a possible plus 10 inner bullseyes. C. Thom, of the United Club (Christchurch), who won the championship in 1937, did not contest the title.

Seven teams reached totals of more than 350, and 24 individual possibles were recorded, compared with 19 the previous week. Working Men's Club reached the phenomenal total of 559 (one point below the possible for the match), and beat Returned Soldiers by nine points. Cashmere A revealed good form and beat Marist, one of the leading teams, by two points. United, the leading team in the grade, won easily from Sydenham.
