REPRESENTATIVE GAMES AT WESTPORT

INANGAHUA BEATS BULLER

The Inangahua Rugby League team was too fast for the Buller representatives in the match at Westport on Saturday. In the first spell, the score was 11 to 0 in Inangahua’s favour, and the final score was Inangahua 2C, Buller 12.

In spite of bad weather, the game was very interesting, and the players in both teams made every attempt to open up play.- N. Osbourne, W. Clarke (2), W. Cutbush, N. Alborn, J. Kelleher, A. Forbes, and F. Roach scored tries for Inangahua, one of which Osbourne converted. For Buller, J. Kennedy, P. Fox, A. Tucker, and P. McManus scored unconverted tries. Besides the scorers, T. McKenzie (fullback) and P. Scott, for Inangahua, and P. Walshe, P. McGregor (forwards), and H. Abbott and W. Smythe (backs) for Buller played well. In the curtain-raiser, the Karamea team made a successful debut to the code by beating a Buller B team by 24 to 0.

Mr P. Henley (Wellington) is a visitor to Westport. Mr W. Baird (Denniston) is an inmate of the Buller Hospital. Mr W. Cooper, jun., has returned to Rotorua after visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Cooper (Denniston).

AERO CLUB BALL

FUNCTION AT WESTPORT

Although the weather was not good, there was a record attendance at the Westport Aero Club’s premiere ball in the Theatre Royal, which was decorated with lycopodium and ballons, with symbols of the Air Force. The Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny), for the club and people of the district, welcomed the visiting pilots. Mr Kilkenny spoke of the work of the visiting pilots in opening the way for the future advancement of the West Coast.

Mr J. C. Mercer, of Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd., Hokitika, and Mr Cummings, president of the West Coast United Aero Clubs, replied. The visiting pilots were Messrs J. C. Mercer, J. A. Bradshaw (Southland Airways), C. G. Lewis and J. Stewart (Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd.). R. Shalcrass (Greymouth Aero Club), ,0. Templeton and R. Maitland. The Victoria Orchestra, of Hokitika, and Mrs Curtis’s orchestra played the music. Mr D. G. Gemmill. secretary of the Aero Club, was master of ceremonies.

BULLER FIXTURES FOR

TO-DAY

The following are the Buller-basket-ball fixtures for to-day:—Technical High School B v. St. Mary's College C at 4 p.m. (Miss J. McGovern): Kawatiri A v. Technical Old Girls B, at 6.15 p.m. (Mr J. Watson); Technical High School A v. Athletic B, at 7 p.m. (Mr J. Connelly): Technical Old Girls Major v. Athletic A, at 7.45 p.m. (Miss E. Findlay).

SCHOOL GAMES AT IJOKITIKA

The following are the results of inter-school basketball matches played at Hokitika on Saturday:—Hokitika School A 9, Grey Technical 8; Grey Technical B 4, Hokitika School B 1. Because of rain, all basketball association matches set down for. Saturday were postponed.

BADMINTON TOURNAMENT AT WESTPORT

A yankee tournament, held by the, Westport Territorial Badminton Club was won by Mrs M. Barr and H. Rambling.

INSPECTION OF HOSPITALS

An inspection of the Buller Hospital institutions was made by Sir Hugh Acland and Mr Stanley Foster, who will make a special report tothe Department of Health on their observations. Special attention was paid to surgical appliances.

AIR TAXI SERVICE AT

WESTPORT

Starting with calls at Westport twice weekly, a tsxi service will be conducted by Air Travel (New Zealand), Ltd., at 'Westport. Mr J. C. Mercer (managing director) told a representative of “The Press” that he was sure the service would be extended to daily calls.
