N.Z. CREDIT IN AUSTRALIA
WHISPERING CAMPAIGN DENIED REPLY TO ALLEGATIONS BY MR SAVAGE CANBERRA, June 24. The Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, states that he is not aware of any whispering campaign in Australia against New Zealand as alleged by the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Savage). “I am sure that no decent Australian would lend himself to any action which is likely to injure New Zealand credit. The general attitude of Australia towards New Zealand is most friendly. The policy of the New Zealand Government is entirely a matter for New Zealand,” said Mr Lyons. [The alleged exposure of the reason for the “whispering campaign” against New Zealand in London made by an Australian newspaper was described by the Prime Minister ("the Rt. Hon M. J. Savage) on Wednesday as a fairly correct statement of the position. “But you have not got to go to London for a whispering campaign,” Mr Savage added. “You can find it in Australia. Some Australian politician? and economists seem to be more concerned about New Zealand affairs than about Australian. My advice to them is to mind their own business for a few moments.”!
