Reminders Nominations for the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on the Riccarton Racecourse on July 9, will close at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club at 5 p.m. on Monday- „ _ , Acceptances for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting will close at 8 p.m. on Monday. Track Work at Riccarton A hard frost at Riccarton yesterday delayed the commencement of training, but with the inside of the trial grass open for fast work, it was possible for all of the horses engaged at Ashburton to-day to have their final gallops, which they did not have on Thursday. The track was rather sticky, but it provided quite satisfactory going. Half Mile Sprints Most of the half-mile tasks were executed along the back stretch. The best time early was credited to the Vaals gelding Rex Maitland, who recorded 50 3-ssec, the first three in 36 2-ssec, and later Garonne was always in front of Crack o’ Dawn in the same time. This stable trio will fulfil their engagements in the Maiden Stakes today. The last-named is a three-year-old filly by Night Raid from Rawene, and will be useful with more time. She is owned by Dr. C. Nigel Smith, of Sydney, and is to be shipped to Randwick after racing at the Westport meeting at Riccarton next month. The Masquerader ran the same distance in 50 4-ssec. and his stable-mate, Synthetic, recorded 51 l-ssec. Others were Merry March and Patuma in 52 2-ssec, Wagner in 53 2-ssec. and Mungatoon 53 4-ssec. Over Five Furlongs Lady Leigh and The Wrecker attracted attention by reeling off five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec, the last four in 52sec. _ Lady Middleham and Supreme Court took Imin 7sec, time that was equalled by Stealamarch, who finished clear of Rose of Tralee, while Master Dingle beat Mazzini in Imin 7 2-ssec. Impressive Work Swordstick upheld his as a good track galloper by beating Financiere and Haughty Winner over six furlongs in Imin 19 3-ssec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. , , Moonraker easily accounted for Nightdress over the same ground in Imin 20sec, the last four in 53sec. From Yaldhurst

M B. Edwards paid a visit with Nocturnus. Cocksure. Phenomenal, and Miss Bluff. The two first-named ran a mile in Imin 51 4-ssec. the first half in 55 l-ssec. x Nocturnus appears to be very forward. He is to be taken over again by A. S. Ellis after to-day’s meetPhenomenal and Miss Bluff were allowed to cover six furlongs m Imin 23sec. Both are two-year-olds, the former being bv Robesnierre from Sundance. and Miss Bluff by Cockpit from Miss Camouflage. A Useful Mile Settlement finished slightly in front of Palmyra at the end of a mile in Imin 45 4-ssec, the first half in 51sec. Flashlight ran over the same ground in Imin 50sec, and Monastic, Courtyard, and Nightbound occupied similar time. . . Additional riding engagements for to-day are;—J. Jennings, Rex Maitland, Greek Gold, Countervane; L. J. Ellis, Garonne, Cocksure, Valantua; A, Messervy. Crack o’ Dawn, Aymon; H. Hibberd. Palmyra, Swordstick, Financiere; G. Humphries, Moonraker, Supreme Court; A. Parsons, Merry March, Mazzini, The Masquerader; W. Jenkins, Synthetic. Two Divisions Arranged In the event of there being 18 or more starters in to-day’s Maiden Stakes at Ashburton, the race will have to be run in two divisions. There were 19 acceptors, but Comus will be missing, and no doubt there may be more defections before the field weighs out. The divisions have been arranged as follows: First Division—Comus, The Wrecker, Stealamarch, Birch Boy, Merry March, Synthetic, Master Dingle, Our Pal, Phenomenal, Rex Maitland. ‘ Second Division—Royal Refrain, Chanteur, Garonne, Bahama Maid, Patuma, Mazamarch, Papernilla, Miss Bluff, Crack o’ Dawn.

Engaged Again Ponty and Enge, who ran a dead-heat in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham last year, are engaged in the same event again next month. Good Prospects Primak has a rise of 131 b from his winning weight at Otaki in the Dannevirke Hunt Cup, but it will take all that to see Croyden reversing places with him. Burghley meets him 171 b better than at Foxton, and might have a chance, but he also will have to improve. Trentham Candidates Monastic, Chile, Survoy, and Nightbound, who are in the field for the Dromore Steeplechase at, Ashburton today, are all engaged in the hack steeplechases at Wellington. Another Wellington candidate engaged to-day is Primak. A Long Spell Red Rufus, top-weight in the hurdle race at Dannevirke to-day, has not raced since Foxton on May 29 last year. He was on the winning list a couple of times last term, the last occasion being a high-weight at Napier, and the earlier one in a similar event at Masterton in October, 1936. He has hurdle placings to his credit, and in very fair company, much better than he will meet to-day. Not Reappointed When new stipendiary stewards were chosen ih Brisbane recently. Mr A. P. Wilson was not reappointed. The Queensland Turf Club decided some time ago to make a change, and having given its stipendiary stewards long notice, called for applications. Mr S. P. Bowen was the only member of the old board to be reappointed. Mr Wilson, who formerly was chief stipendiary steward in New Zealand, had been with the Queensland club for five years and a half. At Te Rapa The allowing riding engagements have l*en announced for the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa.today:— G. Gilchrist, Fleetwmd, Day Wind; P. Fearn, Palmint; R. J. Fearn, Kia Ora; L. Dulieu, Poland, Salesman, London; H. Stokes, Electric Flash, Superior Guard; N. Watson, Bells of Bow, Killadar; T. Williams, Hopalong; J. Mcßae, All Irish; S. Tremain. Barrister; A. Murray, Valmint; J. Muir, Windsor Lad, Inness Lad; N. McKenzie, Enge, Professional, Forest Acre, Sweet Rose, Arawa Rose; J. McLaughlin, Raceline, Orwere; H. Long, Gay Rebel, Hempton; C. L. Goulsbro, Malagigi, Rackle, Hessketoon; W. Thomson, Kena, Mangakaha, Devon; J. Winder, Prince Acre, Master Brierly, Loombination. Death of Father The Hawera owner-trainer, Mr F. Walker, suffered a severe loss this week when the death occurred of the three-year-old Fafner. Fafner was bred by Mr J. J. Barry, of Inglewood, from whom Mr Walker leased the son of Siegfried and Rapt. A little over two years ago he entered J. Fryer’s stable, where he received his early education, but after several months Mr Walker decided to train him himself. Fafner became rather a handful in his early two-year-old career, and he was gelded last October. On his resumption of training, negotiations were opened by Mr Walker for the purchase of the gelding outright, and the deal was. completed in January. Since then he has won two races, besides having numerous minor placings, his victories being achieved at Egmont BBonth sod jQteM m

The Goulsbro Case Giving their decision in the appeal case of C. G. Goulsbro, the judges, Messrs H. F, O’Leary, J. W. Card, and H. Chalmers, state: — “On the hearing of this appeal we have had before us the reports of the proceedings before the judicial committee of the Wanganui Jockey Club and of the Wanganui District Committee, and we have heard further evidence tendered by the appellant and by the stipendiary steward. After fully considering the reports and evidence we have arrived at the conclusion that the appeal should be allowed. “We realise the seriousness of interfering with the findings of judges of first instance on a question of fact, but we are impelled in this case to take the view that, on all we have heard, there is sufficient to raise a reasonable doubt as to the correctness of the conclusion arrived at by the judicial committee.

“We particularly stress that we have no evidence before us that the judicial stewards acted on their own observations, but, on the contrary, we have it that one of them, who appeared before the district committee, made it plain that he himself saw nothing to lead to the conclusion that the horse was not run on its merits. “While we have arrived at our decision on the case placed before us. it is not unimportant to state that the district committee, which comprised very experienced racing men, some of whom closely observed the race, were equally divided on the question of allowing the appeal—the appeal being disallowed on' a casting vote of the chairman. “The further evidence which we heard did not materially advance the. case for or against Goulsbro, and, while we cannot escape the conclusion that he rode an Injudicious race,' we cannot see that it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that he did not ride the horse on its merits. The appeal is.
