GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS H. Ji OTLEY GUESTS ,AT FIVE O’CLOCK PARTY Yesterday, at their home in St. Andrew’s square, Mr and Mrs H. J. Otley received the congratulations of their friends on the celebration of the golden anniversary of their wedding. Mr Otley’s marriage to Miss Kathleen Winny took place in Melbourne, Australia, on June 23, 1888, but with the exception of a few years in Australia, they have spent practically all their married life in Christchurch. Members of the tamily who are visiting Christchurch specially for the wedding anniversary are Mrs Charles C Ellis (North Auckland), Mr and Mrs George Otley (Whakatane), and Mr Sydney Otley (Sumner). In the morning Mr and Mrs Otley entertained at a morning tea party, and in the afternoon they were -s----sisted by Miss Hilda Otley in receiving many of their friends at a most enjoyable 5 o’clock party. The reception rooms were bright with a profusion of gold flowers, many of which had been presented to Mrs Otley during the day. Amongst those present at the 5 o'clock party were Mr and Mrs George Otley, Canon and Mrs W. S. Bean, Mr and Mrs Harry Taylor, Mr and Mrs E. W. Hasell, Mr and Mrs H. WOMEN’S AUXILIARY

CANTERBURY MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association women’s auxiliary was held in the Cosy Corner of the Young Men’s Christian Association’s building, with Mrs C. S. McCully ipresident) presiding. Miss M. G. Havelaar gave an interesting talk on industries in Scotland in the early days, and spoke of the important part that women had played in establishing and promoting those industries. Her talk was a proof that women had for centuries been interested in fostering home and local industries. A competition for small cakes was held, the winner being Mrs Smith, The secretary (Miss F. L. Cooper) spoke of the competitive section of the New Zealand Industries Fair, and reminded those present that entries would close at the middle of next m The*^secretary also reported that she had arranged for a party of members to visit the pottery works of Mr Luke of the committee served afternoon tea.

WELCOME HOME

AFTERNOON PARTY AT D.I.C. An enjoyable afternoon tea party was held in the D.I.C. tea-rooms by members of the Post and Telegraph Women’s Association to welcome Mrs W. H. Smith, president of the club, and Mrs Burns, on their return from a holiday spent In Australia, Miss Duncan, who had been further afield in Britain and Europe, was also welcomed. ~ Mrs Robertson (vice-president) welcomed the travellers on behalf of the club, and members were greatly interested in descriptions of their trips given by the honoured guests. Those present included Mesdames W. H. Smith. A. Robertson, Burns. Bergman. Tullett, Frayle, Flewellen, Minogue, Hill, Drummond. Wimsett, Sloan, Sinclair, Lawford, Campbell. Dunn, Bruce, Cummins, Armstrong. Thomam, Misses Duncan and Sinclair.

CROCKFORD’S CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The Interest taken by members in Crockford’s Bridge Club was -shown by the large attendance—nearly 60 — at the annual meeting held in the club rooms, Mr E. F. Stead presiding. The election of officers resulted as follows:—-President, Mr E. F. Stead; vice-president, Mr D. T. McCormick; committee, Mrs J. J. Ardagh, Mrs Noel Laver, Miss V.
