SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss M. E. Baker. MA, of the staff of the Timaru Girls’ High School, who has been appointed principal of the Wanganui Girls’ High School, was congratulated on her appointment by the Board of Governors at Timaru. Mrs C. I*. Orbell and Miss Janet Orbell (“Pentlow”), who have recently arrived in England, have left""for Plymouth to meet Lieutenant T. D. Herrick, of H.M.S. Gipsy, on his arrival from Gibraltar. Mrs Downes Roberts (Middlemarch) who has been visiting her mother, Mrs Simon Mackenzie (“Otumarama ’). has left to spend a few days in Dunedin before returning home. Mr and Mrs David McLeod (Cass) are staying with •Mr C. 'L. Orbell “Pentlow.” Misses Marion Cray (Seaview terrace) and Marie O’Callaghan (Bidwill street) are visiting Lake Tekapo.

NEW BRIGHTON KINDERGARTEN

ANNUAL BALL The annual ball of the New Brighton. Free Kindergarten held in the Masonic Hall, Nfew Brighton, attracted a large number of guests who spent a very pleasant time dancing to the music of the Jayet orchestra. , The distribution of paper hats and other novelties added to the general gaiety. BALL AT CHEVIOT

NATIONAL PARTY ENTERTAINS There was a good attendance at the National Party’s ball held In the Town Hall, Cheviot. The hall was decorated with streamers and balloons, and window boxes supplied by George Holland’s Band (Christchurch), with extras by Miss G. Fitzgibbon and Mr W. Hayes. Members of the organising committee were Mesdames D. G. H. Bush, T. Edridge, C. A. Mowatt, Misses B. and J. Forbes, Edna Mowatt, Shona Dampler-Crossley. Dallas Wilkinson, Mary O’Boyle, , and Jessie Pain. Messrs D. McLaren and Mr Childs were masters of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss D. Wilkinson and Mr D. Gibb, Miss K. Crampton and Mr K. McQueen. During the evening Mr D. H. G. Bush, president of • the local branch. of the National Party, thanked all who had assisted in making the ball successful.
