MAYOR’S MOTION DEFEATED

PROPOSAL TO INCREASE AUCKLAND RATES SIR ERNEST DAVIS TO CONSIDER POSITION (tress associatiou telegram.) AUCKLAND, June 23. A recommendation by the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) to a special meeting of the City Council this afternoon that the city rates be increased by 2Jd in the £ was defeated in somewhat sensational circumstances. The rates last year were 4s 3sd in the £. The Mayor said that the proposed increase was based not on accounts over which the council had control, but on the increased levies made by the Hospital Board and the Drainage Board. Cr. Coakley moved an amendment that the rates remain as at present. Cr. Fee refrained from voting, but was called on to vote. He voted for the amendment, which was carried by one vote. “I take this as a vote of want of confidence in myself. I will, therefore, take time to consider my position,” said the Mayor. Although a majority of the council decided that the rates* for the current year should be the same as those for last year, the decision can have no effect until the council deals with a notice of . motion given by Cr. J. A. C. Allum to rescind the decision. This notice of motion and the Mayor’s original motion will be considered at a special meeting of the council on Jul' 1.
