EDUCATIONAL VALUE OF ARBOR DAY

NEED FOR TREE PLANTING IN DOMINION

The educational value of Arbor Day in making the rising generation treeminded was emphasised by Mrs Knox Gilmer at a recent meeting of the excutive of the Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand. She recalled the success of last year’s numerous functions and expressed the belief that this year would see further progess.

The president (Captain E. V. Sanderson) said that "Plant a Tree" was a good slogan, but a better one was "Grow a Tree.” It was helpful to have ceremonial tree days, but it was ifltallv important to bear in minfl that New Zealand required tree years and plenty of them to make amends for the blunders of the past in the destruction of native forests on steep watersheds where they were a natural insurance policy ■ against “ the flooding of farmlands on the lower levels. ' Deer were now so numerous in the forests, he said, that they could destroy more young native trees In one day than all the people of New Zealand were likely to plant In a whole year.
