HEAVY GOING LIKELY

WELLINGTON MEETING « (By CARBINE) • - On the whole. Wellington has had a mild and very pleasant winter, but so much rain has fallen this week that heavy i sing for the steeplechase meeting seems assured. Probably the chief effect this will have on the meeting will be to delay the arrival of competitors, whose training will be completed on their home tracks. The prospects of a most successful gathering are bright. One of the notable absentees will be Royal Limond, who looks very well this winter, but whose roguery is increasing with his years. ;■ He"runs off with greater, facility than' ever. - , As Soho won so attractively £t Hastings he was expected at Trentham. If ■ he- misses Riccarton, too, it will become apparent that his owner has decided against bi r hurdling tasks for him this year and intends to give ruin a thorough preparation for jumping events next season. . Reliable new.- concerning Royal Banquet is hot available, but his- absence from Wellington events suggests that this fine jumper did not escape lightly when hf- fell at Hastings. Although Irish Comet is pot coming, his stable will be represented by Smilin’ Thru’, who won the open steeolechase on the third day of V a Great Northern meeting.

ASHBURTON RACES

PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW The Ashburton County Racing Club should have a most successful wint. • fixture to-morrow. The acceptances are not only numerically strong, but they include some of the best available horses and each event bears a very open appearance. The track is likely to be slow, but not heavy, and the going should suit all . classes of gallopers. The win and place system will again be in operation. A special train will leave Christchurch at 9.30 a.m., and the return 'train will leave the racecourse at 4.40 p.m., arriving in the' city at 6.15 p.m. The following horses are likely to be well supported:— Hinds Hurdles—Last Link, Silver Sight. Sunny Comet. Maiden Stakes—Mazamarch, Papernilla. Stealamarch., Lyndhurst Trot—Regal, Peter Bee, Quest. ' Mayfield Hack Handicap—Settlement, Valantua Palmyra. Dromore Hack Steeplechase—Survcv, Flashlight, Monastic. Moreton Hack Handicap—Strip, Financiere, Hunting Chorus. Maronan Handicap)—Swordstick, Valmarch, Moneyless. Winchmore Trot—Attain, Wee Potts, Llewellyn’s Pet. The programme is as follows: 11.45 a.m.—

JOCKEYS’ ASSOCIATION

PROGRESS IN AUCKLAND , The annual general meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association Incorporated drew a.large attendance. Satisfaction was expressed with the progress : made during the last, few months, and indications are that next season will bring practically 100 per cent, membership. : Riders were pleased to learn that there was every chance of at least a large percentage of races reverting to the J-7 minimum. Injured Riders Compensation for injured riders was discussed and the general opinion was that the rate at present paid was far too low. It was considered that single men should receive £3 a week and married men £4 10s, and that tl.e -General Trust Fund should be built up by a levy on winning stakes. Several speakers drew, attention to the fact that under the Workers’ Compensation Act the employer paid the worker’s premium. However, in the case of a jockey the position was reversed, An owner paid £ 1 10s for each horse, but a jockey paid- £ 1 10s a year, plus 2i per cent, on all. riding fees, win. or lose. THe speakers contended that as a result they certainly were entitled to draw a reasonable sum in compensation; Exception was also taken to the practice of deducting £ 1 a week from a. rider’s compensation while he was in hospital. : Officers Elected ~ The following officers were elected for: the 1938-39 season:—President, Mr H. Goldfinch; vice-president, Mr . Dulieu; committee, Messrs R. W. McTavish. P. E. Baker, C. G. Goulsbro, N. C.' Trillo, F. J. Fergus, S. Tremain, and 'J. Muir. MrH. Goldfinch was hominated for the position, of Dominion president, : members naying a tribute to his work * during the last season.’ > 3. - *. A ; - - |- Wagner’s Relative .* A -rising two-year-old at Ellerslie who’ gives indications of being an earlyi galloper, is the Seigfried—Polonaise colt Wapaugh, who is being prepared by R. S. Bagby. Wapaugh is a welldeveloped colt, and is a keen and natural goer on the track., Wapaugh was ' purchased at the Trentham sales by> Mr M.~ Steinberg for 270 gtiineias, and is a full brother to Wagner, ■■■■ -T- -r- . - v!— I OWNERS AND TRAINERS Do vou want to be certain that vour , horse •.will': leave the -barrier and see' out the distance? TURF GOSSIP

Reminders Nominations for the Grand National Steeplechase. Winter Cup, Grand National Hurdle Race, Beaufort and Lincoln Steeplechases, and Sydenham Hurdles, to be decided at, the Canterbury | Jockey ■ Club’s- Grand National meeting in August, will close at 5 p.m. to-day. Nominations for the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on the Riccarton Racecourse on July 9, will close at the office of the Canterbury Jockey Club at 5 p.m. next Monday. Good Going ,at Ashburton Advice - was received last evening that comparatively little rain has fallen at Ashburton this week and the track for to-morrotv’s racing will not be seriously affected. A Quiet Morning Because of the effects of rain there was no track open at Riccarton yesterday for ■ galloping, and the few horses worked were exercised on the sand, most of the trainers making use of the roads; The jumping track was, however, in reasonably good order, and there / was a little jumping. Over Hurdles Gasmask (A. Leach) jumped four hurdles smartly, and Acceptable (J. Brombv) went over five at a sound pace. The latter is certain to be prominent in his-first race over hurdles at Ashburton to-morrow, but the distance will probably find him out. Over Country The Shambles-Heath Lass gelding Culverden arrived from Greymouth on Wednesday with The: Sandwichman both in charge of G. Withers, and yesterday was given his first schooling over steeolechase fences. He gave a very creditable displav. and with experience should make good at the game.: Ashburton Riders - Some riding engagements made for to-morrow’s programme at Ashburton are as follows:—-G. Ridgway, Silver Sight. Nightbdund; G. Linton. Chaste: R. Register. Flashlight: J. Bromby. Acceptable: A. Leach. Gasmask, Monastic; J. Murfitt, Ton Rank, Master Dingle. Guapo: C. Wilson. Settlement, Last Refrain. Royal Refrain; W. Jenkins. Comus. Elbanor; G. Humphries. The Wrecker, Lady Middleham: A. Russell. Chanteur: M. Caddv. Courtyard. Noctumus, Glenacre, Miss Bluff; A. E. Ellis, Rose of Tralee. Patuma. Wagner: R. • Covenv. Th<* Sandwichman; A. Parsons, Merrv March. Because of the likelihood of soft ground at Ashburton. Haughty Winner was withdrawn from the Maronan Handicap on Wednesday. Impressive Wins Lady Montana is likely to claim early friends for, the Whyte Handicap at Trentham. as she is the type of improving filly for such a race. She is brilliant on bad ground and there has been much merit in her latest wins. Limit Exceeded Valantua. who has been entered for the Trial Plate at Wellington, is not eligible. He won a race at Otautaii on April 9 worth £52 to the winner, which is £2 over the limit imposed in the conditions of the race. Classic Events The Auckland .Racing Club received 1307 entries for its classic events to be held at future meetings, compared with 1015 last year, an increase of 292. For the . Welcome Stakes, . nominations totalled 95, Great -Northern Foal Stakes -154, Royal Stakes; 139. Champagne Stakes. 175,' Guineas 205. Derby 225, Oaks 23i; and St. L«?ger 183. . Fpr future events to be staged by the, Avondale Jockey Club -entries aggregated *309, against 269 a' year ago, an increase of 40. There were 51 nominated for the Champion and Nihotapu Plates, 75 for the Avondale Stakes, and ,132 for the Guineas. . For its four fixed-weight races next season the Takapuna Jockey Club received 239 entries, or 114 fewer than 12 months ago. Sixty-ohe were entered for the Takanuna and Wynyard Plates.; 54 for the Punuke Plate, and 63 for the Hauraki Plate. Oamaru Jockey Club The committee of the Oamaru Jockey Club has decided to transpose the position of the Winter Handicap and Burnside Hack Handicap at. its winter meeting next week in order to separate the two open races. The third race will now be the Winter Handicap, and the Burnside Hack Handicap Will follow-

TROTTING NOTES

Trotting at Ashburton The Lyndhurst Handicap, to be run at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow, has drawn 18 acceptors and, as they are all on the limit, the luck of the draw for barrier positions will have an effect on the support accorded. None of these horses has won a race, but several have shown promise. These include Devotion, by Matchlight—Romance, trained by J, Wallis; Fragment by Maxegin—Nanette; Grand Slam by Jack Potts—Harold Dillon mare: Peter Bee by Frank Worthy—Lady Bee; Pecunia by Worthy Bee—Goldwood mare; Quest by Wrack—Zonophone; Regal by Grattan Loyal— Jenny Lind, Jun.; Garment by Silk Thread —Little Doris; Tinker by Truman Direct—Little Princess; Plymouth by Travis Axworthy—Olive Turmoil: and Glenholm by Nelson DerbyGreat Audubon mare.

Improvers In the Trial Handicap at Ashburton on Sapling Stakes day, Attain was first, Gay Lady second, Regal third. Peter Bee fourth, and Quest fifth, and with the first-named pair not engaged in the Lyndhurst Trot Handicap tomorrow form points to the other three taking a hand in the finish. Regal and Quest have raced prominently more than once, and preference must be given to the former, while Peter Bee, trained by D. McKendry, enjoys a good reputation, and is on the •improve. Another useful sort is Silk King by Silk Thread—Glimpse, trained at Addington by J. Davidson. Attain’s Prospects Wee Potts may be one of the favourites for the Winchmore Handicap at Ashburton to-morrow, and. from the strong M. B. Edwards’ stable, he will probably be driven by J. Bryce, jun. Attain registered 3min 21 l-sssc when he won in impressive style at Ashburton on June 6, and a smaller field this time will be all in his favour For Australia Mataunga is the latest New Zealand horse to be purchased for Perth and he is to be shipped as soon as arrangements can be completed. The Travis Axworthy trotter was purchased through the same agency as Rustle, who recorded a recent success in the west.. According to reports, there is a good market, in Perth for unhoppled trotters which have not taken too tight a mark in New Zealand, especially if' they are smart beginners like Rustle and Mataunga. Mataunga should be a good proposition on the small Perth track, fur while he is not a really good stayer he is a quick beginner and a good, steady trotter. On Auckland Tracks The Jack Potts—Martama Rose filly, purchased in Christchurch by J. Gee. has made her appearance at Epsom and has created a favourable impression. She is a typical daughter of Jack Potts, but may require time to develop. One of the most stylish young pacers seen. at Epsom .for some time is the three-year-old Our Princess, by Rey de Oro—Bingen Crest. She is owned by Mr E, C. Webberley, who races Jewel Crest, a half-brother, by Jewel Pointer. Like many of the Rey de Oro tribe. Our Princess has a good turn of early speed. Inter-Dominion Championship A meeting of the Southern District Trotting Club (New South Wales) adopted the following motion: “We inform the New South Wales Trotting Club that we are prepared to carry out the inter-Dominion championships at Goulburn conditional upon the New South Wales Trotting Club subsidising the Southern District Trotting Club to •■'the amount of the prize money or. guaranteeing it against loss.’’

The Trotting Conference Very little business of a contentious nature is to come up for consideration at the ‘annual Trotting Conference at Wellington next month. The most important remit is that dealing with the new rules, a. draft of which,, has been sent to all clubsv- For some time it'has been evident that the rules of trotting have needed overhaul, and the rules which have been under consideration lor some time should fill

these requirements. The remaining remits to come forward are proposed alterations to the new rules, and the majority'of suggestions have been made by the Gore and Winton Clubs. There are no major questions, however, and the business of the conference is unlikely to be drawn out. Two interesting, proposals are those dealing with riders’ and drivers’ licences. The Gore Club suggests that persons under the age of 16 years (and not 18 years as proposed) should not be granted professional licences to ride and drive. The same applies to amateur licences. An Age Limit At the annual conference of trotting clubs the Manawatu Club will propose a new rule “that no driver’s or rider’s licence shall be granted or issued to any person over the age of 60 years.” Breeding Credentials Mr L. C. Hazlett intends to school the three-year-old filly Camerino. Like Wild Irishman she was sired by the Solferino horse Gustavo. Camerino is out of Call Bird, the dam of High Gear and Kelly the Crow, so she has more to recommend her than most for a jumping career. •
