GODLEY CANDELABRUM
MAYOR’S EXPLANATION OP REFUSAL An explanation of the rejection of the offer to the Christchurch Citv Council of the Godley ca” 'elabrum was given yesterday by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane). The offer had been considered by the art gallery committee, he said, which had not reported its decision to the council. The council, therefore, could not be accused of refusing the offer.
“The art gallery committee was interested in the candelabrum only so far as it was a work of art, and the committee did not consider that the candelabrum was a work of art. It considered that it was not interested in the candelabrum for its historical associations alone, and accordingly asked the Canterbury University College Council if it wished to buy the candelabrum for the museum. This offer was rejected by the university authorities. “There was nothing unusual in the fact that the art gallery committee did not report its decision to refuse the offer to dhe City Council,” Mr Macfarlane added. “The art gallery committee has many offers to consider, and it is not its practice, when it refuses an offer, to report its decision to the council.”
