VISITORS’ EVENING
CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB The annual visitors’ evening was held at the club rooms of the Canterbury Chess Club on Tuesday, when there was a large attendance of members and guests. The president (Mr H. R. Abbott) welcomed the visitors, and a knockout lightning tourney was played, all taking part. Only 10 seconds were allowed for each move. The winner was Mr A. Rafferty, and the runnerup Mr W. J. Thompson. Trophies, in the shape of a large chess piece, were presented to the winners. The youngest player in this event was Master Mark Hollander, aged 11, who was successful in reaching ■ the semi-final, and narrowly missed a win against Mr Rafferty. Supper was served by the lady members, after which the New Zealand champion, Mr S. Hindin, gave a simultaneous display against allcomers. He succeeded in winning all the games against 14 opponents.
