A.B.C.—There would certainly be a risk in commencing the building. Advise you to delay until you know the exact position from the Public Works Department. Wager.—There is no universally accepted pronunciation of the word ski. It is Norwegian in origin, and in Scandinavian countries Is pronounced “Shee.” The most usual English pronunciation is also “Shee,” although the Oxford dictionary gives "Skee” as a second pronunciation. “Skee” is the pronunciation used by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Mr Colin Wyatt, the English ski-jumping champion, who visited New Zealand two years ago, pronounced the word “Shee.” His pronunciation is also the one adopted by Mr G. Seligman, the editor of “Ski Notes and Queries," publisned by the Ski Club of Great Britain, the central body of the sport for the British Empire. In French and German the word is pronounced “Skee.” and this pronunciation is adopted by most Europeans and some Englishmen who ski in Switzerland and the Tyrol. It should be noted that ski-ing was introduced into Switzerland by Englishmen who learned the sport in Norway, so that there is no native Swiss pronunciation of the word. The American pronunciation is "Skee.”
