STOCK ON ROADS

COMPLAINT MADE ABOUT WANDERING MALVERN COUNTY COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION Complaints about stock wandering on main highways and other country roads were again received at a meeting of the Malvern County Council. It was resolved to take strong action to abate the nuisance. The tender of Mr A. A. Russell for the reserve at Greendale lately occupied by Mr Foster was accepted. Mr J. K. Calder, of Halkett, was appointed to the position of grader driver. The Tawera County Council drew attention to the unsafe state of two bridges over the main race in the Tawera County and it was decided to renew them on the basis of Malvern £2, and Tawera £l. A petition from the residents of Sheffield to have the south side of the highway through the township paved was favourably considered and it was decided to take the matter up at a meeting of the District Highways Council. Notice'of motion was given to strike a general rate of three farthings in the pound, and a water charge of £1 2s 6d for 100 acres, for the year 193839. The engineer’s report stated:—The crushing plant has been engaged at Waddington for the greater part of the month and is now at Annat, after which it is proposed to shift to Coalgate. The graders have been working during all suitable weather and have completed a total of 100 miles for the month. Although many of the side roads require heavy grading, it was suggested that the scarifying of the rough portion of the DarfieldArundel highway be undertaken first. Tree planting was proceeding in Bull’s and Charing Cross reserves. The Kirwee cemetery was attended to by cutting fences and grubbing gorse.

Obsolete Berlin motor-buses have been fitted with axles and flanged wheels, and ar« run as a light railway in the Magdeburg district.
