THE LEVANT
The Levant is the name given t{ the East Mediterranean in general and more particularly to the coast lands of Turkey in Asia, Syri3 Palestine, and Egypt. In the Middl< Ages trade' with the Levant waj maintained chiefly by French and Italian merchants, but later Eng* lish merchants sent fleets into thl Mediterranean. Levant trade sm> fered from pirates, and from W development of the ocean rOU J e .r? the Far East. The opening of tns Suez Candl route again took Bnt* ish ships to Levantine seas.
