PROPOSED TRANSFER TO GREYMOUTH OBJECTIONS FORWARDED TO MINISTER ' The proposal of the Mines Department to remove the mines office from Reefton to Qreymouth, and to station both inspectors of mines there, is meeting with opposition in the Inangahua district. Mr F. Seawright, chairman of the Inangahua County Council, sent a telegram tb the Minister for Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb), asking if there were any truth in the rumour, and if so, that the council wished to protest. The accommodation at Reefton was most unsatisfactory, and it was impossible to secure suitable offices there, Said the telegram of the Minister in reply. To facilitate departmental business arrangements had been completed to transfer the office to Greymouth A further telegram from the county Chairman asked Mr Webb to withhold his final decision about the removal of the office from Reefton pending the receipt of a petition against the proposal. “Premises have already been obtained in Greymouth, and I regret very much that the transfer cannot be held up.” was the Minister’s reply. No reply has yet been received to a further telegram from the county chairman asking for an alteration of the Minister’s decision. DOGS WORRY SHEEP TROUBLE IN FLOCKS NEAR WESTPORT Sheep farmers near Westport have been troubled by the depredations of Stray dogs, ■which have made raids on several runs, severely molesting the sheep and at times causing death. These dogs have struck at various points during the last’ week, and have been difficult to detect at their work. The sheep have been found in the mornings to be suffering from their worrying. One farmer, Mr J. .M. Dixon (Victoria road), who suffered a considerable loss last year from night raids by dogs before his gun Sut an end to the marauders, has ad visits from the dogs which have recently been troubling the sheep.
