NARROW WIN FOR N.Z. TEAM

TOOWOOMBA LEAGUE SIDE FAILS BY A POINT , HEMJ’S KICKING WINS THE DAY Itrnru mu *.bioci*tiom —coptwobt.) (Received June 23, 12.30 a.m.) TOOWOOMBA, June 22. The New Zealand Rugby League team narrowly won by 12 points to 11 against Toowoomba, after a game in which the losers dominated almost the entire second half. Only Hemi’s kicking provided the winning margin. Toowoomba scored three tries, and the New Zealand team two.

The tackling was weak. With the exception of McNeight and Herring, the visitors were too prone' to go for the head instead of taking their man low.

After a consultation, the Toowoomba captain and the referee decided on a more liberal interpretation of the play-the-ball rule, but rarely did either side observe the ; three-yard limit. Anderson was the outstanding forward. on the ground. His clever backing up resulted in two tries. Kay’s shoulder gave him no trouble but he spared .himself 'tackles. ‘He made several brilliant openings, and combined well with Chase. Orman was beaten for the ball in the first - half, but got it in the vital concluding stages. Anderson’s first try came from an opening by Kay, who picked up the ball from.the ruck and ran 20 yards,' leaving Anderson an open gate. Thesecond carpe from a scramble on the goal-line after Br-imble received it from the scrum, cut off the opposing five-eighths and centre, and. ran 40 yards down the centre of the field. That was one of the few occasions on which Brimble did anything else but short-punt the ball. The New Zealanders defended gallantly against desperate attacks, in which the play was confined to their territory in the closing quarter of an hour. The teams were;— New Zealand—Hemi, Kidgley, Kay, Chase, Smith, W. Brimble, Grbtte, Anderson, Herring, McLeod, Glynn, Orman, McNeight. Toowoomba Whitle, Brown,Rowe, Dwyer, Bligh, Gilbert, M. Brown, O’Brien, Enright, Clifford, Bushamer, Kelly (one. name missing). V 'Rules for Saturday After g complaints from the New Zealand managers about the play-the-ball interpretation in the match against Queensland last Saturday, the Queensland League decided today that the three-yard rule will be strictly enforced next Saturday. This will prevent the Queenslanders standing on top of the New Zealanders as they, did in the first match. , “I feel certain now that the team will give a much better account of itself; on Saturday/’ said Mr J. A. Redwood, the manager, when informed of the decision. The Queensland team for Saturday is unaltered. Gault has been in Vpain ever since he entered hospital on' Monday. An X-fay examination- has been made, but the result : will not be known before Thursday. “The doctors do not think it is anything serious; probably only a bruise,” said Mr Redwood. Tetley is taking things quietly and resting his injured knee. . “There will not be any further developments in the proposed test until the result of Saturday’s game is. known,” commented Mr Redwood. - -
