SOUTHERLY STORM

HEAVY RAIN, WITH SNOW INLAND COLD SNAP FOLLOWS MILD WEATHER A southerly storm yesterday brought heavy rain to most parts of Canterbury and snow to some inland districts. After mild north-westerly weather for several days, the cold .snap was felt severely. Rain fell steadily in Christchurch from an early hour yesterday morning and there was a cold wind from the south-west. When the sky cleared about 6 p.m.,the rain ceased, but began again soon after and self in for the night. After rain on Tuesday night, the weather was very stormy at Oxford yesterday, and the prospects last night were for snow. The * foothills were covered with snow yesterday, and a fall of about four inches was reported from Lees Valley. With rain and sleet falling steadily last night, conditions at Springfield were also bad. Heavy snow covers the foothills. Snow and rain fell yesterday at Arthur’s Pass and the weather there late last night was cold and stormy, giving no sign of clearing. Half an inch of snow covered the ground at Hanmer Springs yesterday morning, the south-westerly storm be»ng in strong contrast to the mild weather during the week-end. Showers of rain yesterday melted the snow, but sleet fell last night again and there was no indication - of an improvement. The foothills behind Methven are snow-covered to a low level. The weather yesterday afternoon was wet and cold. Heavy rain fell at Little River, where the high level of Lake Forsyth was responsible for water lying across the main road in places. The road was still passable. Akaroa also had heavy rain all day yesterday. The Waimakariri river was about two. feet above normal yesterday; but the level was falling. It began to rise on Monday and reached a peak of three feet above normal after the north-wegterly' weather, but has been falling steadily since then.
