The Imperial Japanese Life-Saving Institution has caused a letter of appreciation and a silver cup to be delivered to His Majesty’s Consul-Gen-eral at Yokohama for presentation to Mr Joseph Garrett, master of the motor-vessel Athelknight, in recognition of his having, last January, towed the disabled Japanese fishing boat Fukuyoshi Maru to Hakodate and saved the crew of 11. It is claimed that artificial lightning capable of splitting a tree has been produced at the Siemens works in Germany.
