TAKAHE AKAROA RELAY

176 ATHLETES TO COMPETE BIG RACE ON SATURDAY TEAMS FROM WEST COAST AND TIMARU One hundred and seventy-six athletes will compete on Saturday in the fourth Takahe-Akaroa relay race, the season’s biggest ahletic event. The field this year is one of the largest on record, including among its 22 teams, an entry from the West Coast and two from South Canterbury.

The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, according to the established custom, will start the runners on their journey. After a short ceremony at 10.15 a.m. the first group of 22 athletes will set out at 10.30 on the first stage of the race, from the .Takahe to

Allandale. The journey will be divided into eight stages, over a distance of approximately 47 J miles. Hundreds of athletes and spectators will travel along the route to Akaroa, goiijg over Dyer’s Pass at the Sign of the Kiwi, then down to the bays at the head of Lyttelton Harbour, up to Gebbie’s Pass beneath the radio towers, and on to the main road at Gebbie’s Valley. The race follows one of the finest scenic routes in Canterbury. The visitors will spend the weekend at Akaroa, where the people of Akaroa will offer the entertainment that has now become traditional. Carried inside the batons will be a message of goodwill from the Mayor of Christchurch to the Mayor of Akaroa, Mr F. R. E. Davis. Stages of Journey The stages of the journey and the approximate distances are as follows: Takahe to Allandale, 5.4 miles. Allandale to Gebbie’s Valley, 6.1 miles. Gebbie’s Valley to Kahuna, 6.5 miles. Kaituna to Lake Forsyth, 6.1 miles. Lake Forsyth to Little River, 7 miles. Little River. to* Hilltop, 4.5 miles. Hilltop to Duvauchelle, 5.4 miles.
