Mrs Andrew Rutherford and Miss Emily Rutherford (Mendip Hills) will leave to-night for Wellington to join the Awatea for ’Sydney. They will also visit Queensland and will return to Canterbury in September. Mrs C. H. Gresson (Timaru) arrived from the south yesterday to spend a week in Christchurch. Mrs Herbert Hudson (Fendalton) will leave next week for Wellington to meet her brother, Mr E. T. R. Carlyon, who will arrive from England by the Rangitiki. She will later visit Hawke’s Bay. Miss J. Turnbull, who has been visiting Mrs G. B. Bullock, Fendalton, has returned to her home in Timaru. The actual cost of children’s health camps in Southland is 11s lOd a week for each child, according to the annual report of the Health Camp Association. When visiting Masterton last week the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), at .the request of the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan), presented to Miss Zoe Pickering the Humane Society awards made to her and her sister (now Mrs Ingley) for their gallant effort to save the life of a man who was drowning in Lake Wairarapa. Dr, and Mrs Neil Matson (Cambridge) arrived in Christchurch from the north yesterday morning. Miss Joan Guningham (Innes road) will be the guest of Mrs C. E. Anderson, Dalmeny Park, Hawarden, for the Brackenfield gaieties this week-end. Mrs D. V. Donaldson (Cashmere Hills) has returned from a visit to the North Island. Mrs W. J, Minogue (Cholmondeley avenue) has returned from a visit to Mid-Canterbury. The Mayoress, Mrs R. M. Macfarlane, was yesterday appointed to represent the North Canterbury Hospital Board on the St. John Ambulance Association. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Miss Adeline Turner was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. Mrs Bernard Wood (St. Elmo Courts) will leave on Monday for a short visit to Wellington. Miss Lydia Williams, eldest daughter of the late Archdeacon Samuel Williams, died in Napier on Monday,, aged 84. Although blind, Miss Williams took a lively interest in current affairs and with the use of a Braille typewriter conducted her own correspondence. Miss Joyce McCartney (Auckland) will arrive in Christchurch this week to spend a short holiday. The death of Mrs C. C. Odlin, wife of the managing director of the C. and A. Odlin Timber and Hardware Company, Ltd., occurred on Tuesday at her home, “Camperdown,” Lower Hutt. Miss Enid Orr, who has been secretary of the Christchurch branch of .the Columba College Old Girls’ Association, has expressed her intention of resigning from that position. Last night at the annual dinner party of the branch. Miss Orr was thanked by the president, Mrs Lance Jewell, for the good work she had done for the association, and, on behalf of members of the local branch, she was presented with a mah-jong set. ■ Amongst those who will visit Wellington to attend the annual Dominion conference of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union on July 12 will be Mrs Leonard Coop, president of the North Canterbury provincial executive, and Mrs John Parlane, who will represent the North Canterbury executive, Mrs H. A. Nutt, a Dominion vice-presi-dent, Mrs A. E. G. Lyttle, who will represent the Christchurch branch, Mrs L. Dulieu (Greenpark), Mrs F. Small (Governor’s Bay), Mrs Orchard (Harewood), Mrs Roberts (Redcliffs), Mrs Ensor and Mrs Warren (Okuku), Mrs R. G. Wolff and Mrs G. Cowens (Cust-West Eyreton), Miss Betty Coop (Kaituna), Mrs M. Leech (Woodend), Mrs Smith (Oxford), Mrs R. Ambridge (Riccarton), Mrs I. F. Croft (Amberley), Mrs White (View Hill), Mrs G. Ward (Fernside), Mrs R. MacLachlan (Tai Tapu), and Mrs Templeton (Motukarara). An excellent programme has been arranged for the Repertory Society’s At Home to be held in the Winter Garden to-morrow night, and the gathering is attracting unusual interest. Choruses will be sung by the Orpheus Choir, and solos by Mr Len Barnes and Miss Bessie Dini and two one-act plays will be presented by members of the society. After supper a dance will be held, the Bailey-Marston orchestra supplying the music.
