WOMEN TO HELP IN DEFENCE
NEW ORGANISATION IN BRITAIN
TRAINING FOR AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIBZLZSS.) RUGBY, June 16. Plans for recruiting 500,000 members for an organisation called “Women’s Voluntary Service” were announced to-night. The Dowager Lady Reading is at the head of the organisation, which will not be officially associated with any of the defence forces but will work in close co-operation with local authorities, Government departments, and other women’s organisations. The main duties of the organisation will be connected with air raid precautions. Women between the ages of 17 and 65 are being invited to volunteer, whether married or single. They will receive training in anti-gas and general air raid precautions measures. There will be no uniform and no attempt to copy a military type of organisation.
