WINTER SHOW

ASHBURTON FANCIERS’ SOCIETY GOOD DISPLAY OP POULTRY Poultry was again the’ feature of this year’s winter show’ which opened in the Ashburton Arcade yesterday, under the auspices of the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society. A change in the policy of the society resulted in many unprofitable sections being deleted in this year’s show, which was confined to poultry, caged birds, dogs, and cats. The poultry classes attracted a wide range of birds in which Orpingtons predominated in both the utility and open sections. The entries could not be expected to reach .last year’s total of 1169 with so many sections deleted, but they were a record in poultry and caged birds. The total was 872, compared with 652 for the same classes last year. The canaries and budgerigars were an attractive part of the show, and comprised a wide variety of birds. An outstanding exhibit in the poultry section was a Minorca pullet shown by W. Cummings (Christchurch), who won the A. L. Jones Cup for the best bird in the show, the Davis Memorial Cup for the best cockerel or pullet, the Murdoch Bruce Cup for the best bird in light breeds, and the Collett Challenge Cup for the best utility Black Minorca cock or pullet. The Peter Donald Memorial Cup for the best Black Orpington was again won by G. H. Nicoll. The dogs and cats will be judged to-day. The organisation of the show was handled by. an energetic’committee of voluntary workers, of which Mr G. H. Nicoll is chairman and Mr R. J. Bruce is secretary. The official opening was held last evening, when the Mayor (Dr. G. I. Miller) declared the show open and congratulated the society on the splendid organisation of its show. Details of the entries, with those of similar classes last year, are as follows; — 1933 1937 Poultry, pigeons, canaries, etc. 701 512 Dogs 150 100 Cate 21 40 Totals ~ .. 872 652 The Prize List Championships were won as follows: — New Zealand award for utility White Leghorn pullet; L.
