TORTOISES FOR GRASS GRUBS

TO TVS EDITOR OF THE FREER. Sir, —On seeing in “The Press” of Saturday a photograph of tortoises it occurred to me that they might possibly be a solution to the grass grub problem. I imagine that they are night-feeding creatures and, if they are, would they not (like our muchmaligned hedgehog) attack the porina, which lives eight or so inches down in the ground and only comes up at night? Another solution would be to leave the native duck alone. It is also a night-feeding creature.—Yours, etc., PORINA. Temuka, June 14, 1938.
