Replacing a tree planted 60 years ago by the ]\larquess of Normanby, •which was removed two years ago, the Governor-General (Lord Galway) planted a gingko tree in the Botanic Gardens yesterday morning. His Excellency was received at the museum gate of the gardens, near which the tree was planted, by Mr F. George, deputy-chairman of .the Christchurch Domains Board, members of the board, and Mr J. A. McPherson, curator of the gardens. , Mr George expressed the board s appreciation of Lord Galway’s interest in the gardens, and his willingness to spare time for the tree-planting ceremony. He mentioned the work being done by his Excellency to improve the surroundings of Government House, Wellington, remarking that he was sure that Lord Galway’s successors in office would be grateful for his thoughtfulness. In a brief speech, Lord Galway thanked the board for giving him the opportunity of planting a tree in such delightful surroundings. He said that he admired very much the lay-out and beauty of the gardens, which he was never tired of visiting. The tree, he was sure, would be well looked after, and would be an asset to the gardens. , , XI His Excellency then replaced the soil round the roots of the tree, remarking that it was a good specimen.
