TO-DAY’S SPORTS

♦ VARIED PROGRAMME FOR CITY KENNETT CUP STEEPLECHASE This afternoon • will see the commencement of a comprehensive sports programme which will extend over the long week-end. There is a varied programme of activities in and round the city, notable events being the Kennett Cup steeplechase for crosscountry runners, and an open golf tournament at the Russley course. To-day’s Rugby draw brings Lmwood, the leading team in this year's senior competition, against University, one of last season’s champion teams This game, on the Lancaster Park oval, will be preceded by the match between Sunnyside and Christchurch, beginning at 1.15 p.m. On the south ground at Lancaster Park, Albion will play Technical Old Boys. The outside grounds both have attractive games. At the Show Grounds Old Boys will meet Sydenham, and at Rugby Park Merivale will play Athletic. Rugby League enthusiasts in the city will have the choice of matches between Hornby and Addington at Sydenham Park, and Linwood and Waimairi, at Monica Park. Rakaia will play Sydenham, at Rakaia. The meeting of Thistle and Technical is the chief event of the Association football programme. This match will be played at English Park Y.M.C.A. v. Nomads, at Spreydon. and Western v. Rangers, at Linwood Park, are the other senior fixtures. Men and women hockey players will continue their inter-club competitions this afternoon. All the senior women’s matches will begin at 1.30, and a trial representative match wlil be played at 3 o’clock. The draws for the respective sections are as follows: Men—-Sydenham v. University, at Hagley Park No. 8; Redcliffs v. Trinity, at Hagley Park No. 7; Selwyn v. Technical, at Hagley Park No. 6. Women—Canterbury College v. West Christchurch, Hagley Park No. 4; Digby’s v. Kiwi, Hagley Park No. 1; Aranui v. Hornby, Hagley Park No. 5; Training College v. Technical, Hagley Park No. 2. Hard-court lawn tennis players will be hoping for better weather , than they had last week for their inter-club matches at Wilding Park. The draw for to-day’s games is as follows:—Avonside v. Edgeware B, Linwood v. Edgeware A, Canterbury College v. Addington, North Beach A v. North Beach B. In the senior basketball competitions at South Hagley Park this afternoon, Technical A will play Training College on court 1, and St. Mary’s A will play University A on court 2. The first open event of the crosscountry season, the Kennett Cup steeplechase, will be held at the Riccarton racecourse to-day. The Caversham Club (Dunedin) has sent a strong team to defend the trophy, which it won from Civil Service (Dunedin) last year. A big field of Christchurch runners will also take part, and the competition this year is likely to be more evenly-balanced than in the past. The race will be held at the Riccarton racecourse, over two laps of the course, a distance of three milfes and a half. The runners will start at 3 p.m.
