BICYCLE SHED WANTED

; ; ——♦ EDUCATION BOARD CRITICISED “SHUFFLING” ALLEGED AT GREYMOUTH (T!IK PRESS Special Service.) GREYMOUTH. June 3. Criticism of the Canterbury Education. Board and of the two West Coast members, Messrs R. Wild and H. J. Bignell, during which it was alleged that the board had “shuffled,” was voiced at the meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee last night. The board had refused a request first made by the committee two years ago, that a bicycle shed be built at the school. . Mr A. E. Morgan presided. A decision was reached that the chairman, during his next visit to Christchurch should make urgent representations to the Education Board and that, if these were unsuccessful the committee should consider doing the work, paying for it out c£ its own funds and later applying to the Board for a grant. Advice was received from the Canterbury Education Board that because of many more urgent requests, it was unable to make a grant for the bicycle shed. The matter would be deferred in the meantime as would be the question of providing materials for it. If the committee itself built the shed, said Mr Morgan, it could give up all idea of getting the board to make a refund. Mr J. Patterson: The board would consider that we walked where angels fear to tread. Mr -G. F. Shapcott: There is no need to be ■ antagonistic to the board. We can “kid” to them. Our immediate problem is to get 60 children’s bicycles under cover from rain. In reply -to Mr Morgan, the headmaster, Mr J. Graham, said that the local members of the board had last visited the school about two or three years, ago. Mr Williams: They’ should come more -often. They are lacking in their duty and only -sitting there making a. holiday of it. Directors of companies, always keep in touch with their work .and those members should do the same.. The board, said ,Mr R. J. Logan, knew well ,fiie climate on the West Coast required special consideration. He had noticed that, the Minister for Education on a recent visit to Ashburton had ordered plans .to replace a school there which was two years newer than that at Greymouth.
