PONY GYMKHANA

A GREAT SUCCESS VARIED PROGRAMME OP EVENTS The third Malvern Pony Gymkhana, probably the most important event of the May holidays for the children of the district, was held on Saturday, at “Bangor,” Hawkins, in paddocks kindly lent by Major and Mrs G. F. Hutton. The weather was fine, calm, and cold, and there was an excellent attendance, many visitors from Christchurch enjoying the day’s outing in pleasant surroundings. The number of entries was a record, no fewer than 24 taking part in the pig-sticking competition in the senior division. Many novelty events had been added to the programme, increasing the interest of competitors and the entertainment of spectators. Members of the Sheffield Agricultural and Pastoral Association provided tea, rolls, and hot saveloys,' for which th*re was a brisk demand. The committee had made first-class arrangements, which entailed much preliminary, work, and members were unremitting in carrying out their duties on the field. WAITAKI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL FORMER SCHOLARS MEET IN LONDON On May 9. former scholars of the Waitaki Girls’ High School, Oamaru met in London, in the India Room of the Royal Empire Society building, to mark the occasion of the jubilee of the school, which was being celebrated in New Zealand at the same time. Lady Rankine presided over a gathering representative of various years of the school’s life. A cabled message of greeting and congratulation was sent to the jubilee gathering in Oamaru. Cordial greetings were received from the London branch of the Waitaki Old Boys’ Association, and from Mrs T. W. Cane, Mrs R. N. Shand. Mrs W. M. Barron. Miss J. G. Hall, and Miss M. W. Tait. who were unable to be present. The gathering was friendly and informal and many reminiscences of school days were exchanged during afternoon tea. Those present were Lady Rankine, Mrs Farquhar, Mrs R. S. Forsyth, Mrs R. Milligan, Miss M. E. Grant, Mrs E. Goldsworthy, Miss J. Farquhar, Mrs Sowdon, Mrs Patrick, Miss D. Craig, and Miss D.
