RETURNED SOLDIERS’ CONCERT About 20 sailors from the French warship Rlgault de Genouilly were entertained by the Lyttelton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association at a smoke concert held in the association's rooms on Saturday evening. The room was decorated with French and British flags. Nearly 100 returned soldiers were present. The president of the branch (Mr A. Large) presided and welcomed the visitors. . , In Proposing the toast of the visitors, Mr W. T. Lester expressed the hope that the cordial relations between France and Great Britain would exist always. The French, he said, had proved themselves chivalrous foes and faithful allies. Petty Officer Lenglen and Mr J. Thompson replied. During the evening a programme of musical items was presented. Community singing was led by Mr Ray Harrison, who also gave a number of solo items, and Lyttelton’s Own Orchestra played many popular numbers. Old war songs were sung, and the visitors gave a spirited exhibition of how the “Marsellaise” should be talk by Lieutenant Collins, D.S.M., on submarine experiences at the Dardanelles and elsewhere, and talks by several representatives of the branch who visited Sydney during the Anzac Day service were given.
