DAMAGE TO AUCKLAND JEWELLER’S SHOP

MAN SENT TO HOSPITAL WITH INJURED WRIST

[THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, May 1. A half-brick wrapped in a brown paper bag was used late to-night to smash the main display window of the jeweller’s shop of Mr Ernest McFeat, at 323 Karangahape road. The window contained diamond and signet rings, watches, and other jewellery valued at more than £4OO, but as far as could be ascertained by a hasty examination of the scattered goods, nothing was missing after the window had been broken. Community lights were burning near the shop when the crash of broken glass attracted a neighbour and a, passing motorist at 10.55 p.m. The motorist, Mr V. Hoggard, of 15 Barrington road, Grey Lynn, was on his way home when he heard the window broken, and on returning to the shop he saw a gaping hole in the glass. There was blood on the jagged glass and also on the foopath. A middle-aged man with his right wrist deeply cut was found near the shop. An ambulance and the police were called by telephone, and on the arrival of the ambulance it was found that the man had suffered severed arteries and sinews. He was taken to the Auckland Hospital in the ambulance accompanied by a constable and was later admitted to hospital. The half-brick, still in its paper wrapping, was found inside the broken window. It was removed by the police, and the window, after being cleared of the stock by Mr McFeat, was boarded up for the night.
