MAY DAY PARTY

Many children spent a happy time in the Excelsior Hall on Saturday afternoon, when the annual fancy dress May Day party was held, in aid of the funds of the Lyttelton Plunket Society. Special prizes for the May, Queen were given by Mesdames F. E. Sutton, W T. Lester, L. Matthews, Hopkinson, H' A. Rhind, T. A. Mahar, I. Donahoe, and Alex. Gardiner. The May Queen, chosen by adult vote, was Jean Henderson, and Patsy Rudd, who secured second highest votes, was her attendant. The children were entertained with games and competitions and refreshments were served. Songs were given by Peggy Hart, Josephine Hayes, and pupils of the Convent of Mercy, recitations by Shirley Hart, Joyce Heal, Nora McCormick, and Helen Smith, a Scottish dance by Jean Henderson, and dances by the following pupils of. Miss D. E. Swaby —Janet Wilson, Betty Woolley Ngaire Magill, Gwenda Miller, and Alice Hardwick. Accompaniments were played by Mrs I. Donahoe, Misses I. Wells, and Z. Zander and Mr D. Zander. The costumes were judged by Mesdames J. Ashley, C. Toy. and Hopkinson, and prizes were awarded as follows: —Girls under nine yesirs, best dressed. 'Patricia and .Magreen Hughes (Two Little Girls in Blue), most original, Heather Henderson (Karitane Nurse); cheapest costume, Joyce Heal (Chip of the Old Block), special prize, Nora McCormick (Indian Maid). Five years, best dressed’ Kathleen Donahoe (Powder Puff), most original, Lois McLean (Players Cigarettes); cheapest costume, June Neill (Custard Powder): special prize, Shirley McLean (Penguin). Girls over nine years, best dressed, Jean _ Neill (Red Riding Hood); most original, Aileen Gilmore (Hawaiian GrrD, cheapest costume, Rena Griffiths (Brown Paper Parcel). Boys, under nine years, best dressed, Lfluxence Heirkess (Father Christmas); cheapest costume. Gerald Zander (Edmonds Baking Powder): most original B°y tester (Why Did I Kiss That Girl.), special, Peter Miller (Russian); boys under five years, Hugh Gilmore (Footballer); special, Laurie Wales (ChineSOther children present included Mary Donahoe (May Queen), Barbara Fox (Bridesmaid), Lorene Leader (Shepherdess), Margaret Hammond (May Queen), Elwyn Hammond (Flower Girl), Beverley Gilmore (May Queen), Audrey Norris (Ballet Girl), Dorothy Anderson (Page Boy), Madge Stanley (Chinese Refugee), Mar/ Bowery (Japanese Lady), Alice Hardwick (Gipsy), Coila Radcliffe (May Queen), Gladys Miller (Dutch Boy), Betty Woolley (Russian), Alison Hughes (Daffodil), Margot Gardiner (Flower Girl), and more than 50 others* not in fancy dress. Golf Medal matches were held by the Charteris Bay Golf Club yesterday with results as follows: Men—Senior; A. M. Jackson, 82, 19 — 63; G. Candy. 91, 19—72. Junior: A. Dyne, 90, 25—65; E. Swain, 92, 24—68. Women —Senior: Miss Z. Hudson, 87, 8, 79. Junior: Mrs R. Candy, 110, 31— 79; Miss Ngaire Gebbie, 117, 36—81. A women’s eclectic match for a trophy presented by Miss C. Williams was won by Mrs R, Candy, 49, 16—33, the runner-up being Miss M. Gebbie, 53. 18—35.
