INTERESTING CONTEST EXPECTED
THE POSITION AT NEW BRIGHTON
The election in New Brighton will be one of the most interesting yet held. It is generally understood that because of the general opinion of residents in favour of amalgamation with Christchurch the council to be elected (and all candidates are supporting amalgamation) will be the last to hold office. Another interesting feature is the Mayoral contest, between Messrs E. A. M Leaver, a former Mayor, and Mr E. L Smith, the present Mayor. There have been two previous contests by the candidates, Mr Leaver winning on the first occasion and Mr Smith on the second. . .„ . ... The council elections will be, with the exception of the case of Mr W. E. S. Furby (Independent) a straight-out contest between the sitting councillors and the Labour Party. This is the first occasion on which the Labour Party has officially contested the local council election and it has a ticket of eight. . . . The sitting councillors have organised for the election, and. although independent, are supporting the present Mayor. Cr. W. P. Nolan intended nominating, but was in the city on business, and through a misunderstanding of the time nominations closed arrived too late. The Returning Officer (Mr C. T. Middleton) could not accept his nomination.

There will be no contest for the Power Board.
