NEW MOTOR-SHIP

KAIPARA AT LYTTELTON

An arrival at Lyttelton yesterday morning from New York, via North Island ports, was the fast new motor-ship Kaipara, which is on her first visit to New Zealand. The Kaipara was launched from the cast yard of Messrs W. Doxford and Sons in October last, having been built to the order of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd. The last of the five vessels built for the Eastern Canada-New Zealand-Austra-lia trade and the second for the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Kaipara began her career under the most unfavourable conditions. After running her trials successfully in Whitley Bay, near the Tyne, she set out tn January in ballast for Canada, and ran into the worst Atlantic gale of the winter. Several vessels were seriously damaged, and a number of lives were lost on ships in parts of the East Atlantic. The Kaipara was severely buffeted. It was considered advisable to put back for repairs, and she ran for Glasgow, where the damage, which was not serious, was repaired. The Kaipara has been specially designed for the trade between Canada, Australia, and Hew Zealand. She is a single-screw , ship with a Doxford opposed-piston, fourcylinder oil engine of 4800 indicated horsepower. She is an open shelter deck vessel with three complete decks and with a raked stem and conical stern. She is 438 feet long, 59 feet broad, and has a moulded depth of 29 feet 8 inches. Electric welding has been used considerably in her construction. Five main hatchways serve the cargo space, and a deep tank forward of the engine-room is fitted for water ballast. Insulated space for meat and vegetables is arranged in a 'midships storeroom. The Kaipara is discharging to the agency of the Federal Company. She will leave later for Dunedin.
