A TRAFFIC DELAY

10 THB CntTOR Or Til* PBEBB. Sir.—r should like to bring to your notice an incident that occurred at the Bank of New Zealand corner this morning, during the period the traffic lights were being given a trial. Proceeding along High street, towards the Square. I pulled my car up behind a car stationed between the High street light and the detector pad and waited for the light to turn to green. The lights completely changed twice and no amount of warning by my car horn or the cars behind, which were now numerous, would move the car in front. As it was impossible to reverse my car, as the car behind was too close, I went and spoke to the driver of the car. Imagine my surprise to find the Chiet- Traffic Inspector, and. a weU- | known member of the City Council in the car. My request to move their car in 1 order that I and the traffic behind might 'be able to move forward was met with a remark that was totally unworthy of the occupants. _ This attitude towards the motorists will not bring about an understanding between the officers and the motorists which is so essential in the control of traffic. I would remind the officer that he should help the* motorists rather than hinder them, as I feel sure all motorists are only too pleased to help the officers, although the demeanour of many of the officers is deplorable. From my nom-de-plume, the gentlemen concerned will see that I do understand the traffic lights, and the control of traffic—Yours, etc.. EX-P.C. METROPOLITAN POLICE. April 27. 1938. [When this letter was referred to him the Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr J. Bruorton) said that, if the writer would call on him, he would be pleased to explain the incident. Mr Bruorton said he was discussing the operation lof the traffic lights with a member of the City Council at the time They would have moved had they heard a I horn, sounded.]
