ADAMS BEATS JARVIS

PROFESSIONAL CONTEST AT * ASHBURTON

There was a large attendance at the Radiant Hall, Ashburton, last evening when Jack Jarvis (Elthatn), the New Zealand light-weight boxing champion, was beaten by Les Adams, the Ashburton professional. on points in a 12-round contest. . Tile Ashburton Boxing Association suffered a severe setback when a great deal of fits equipment was destroyed in the Majestic Theatre fire last year, on the eve of what promised to be a very successful tournament, blit the Interest shown in last night’s bout promises well lor the rest of the season.

Adams took the ring_ at lost 41b and Jarvis was 9st 71b. The bout was interesting throughout. Both began cautiously, Adams scoring with lefts to the head and Jarvis with heavy rights to the body. Adams used his left effectively and smother well, gaining a lead on points on the early rounds. Both scored with in-fighting. In the seventh round Jarvis began to force the fight, using lefts and rights to the head and heavy rights to the body. Adams countered with straight lefts and hooks, shaking his opponent In the eighth round, during which there were several toe-to-toe exchanges. Jarvis bored In and the honours in the round were even.

Good in-fighting with effective uppercuts and rights to the head gave Adams a margin of points in the ninth round. He also scored in the tenth, but Jarvis came to light with several telling left and right hooks toward the end of the round. Jarvis tried to force the pace in' the eleventh round, but Adams retaliated with a series of swift finally forcing his opponent through the ropes after a very willing encounter. > • , Both men exchanged heavy body punches in the last round, Jarvis slipping to the mat. Adams definitely had the upper hand, connecting with several lefts to the head, and attacked until the end of the bout. • .

Amateur preliminaries resulted:— Bantam-weight—R. Smith (Ashburton), Bst 131b, beat W. Jarvis (Christchurch), Bst 61b, after a willing'bout. Fly-weight—P. Connolly (Ashburton), 8»t 131b, beat J. Carter (Christchurch), Sst 121b, in an interesting bout. Fly-weight—W. Gamble (Christchurch), 7st 121b. beat R. Rayner (Blenheim). 7st 101b. Rayner put up a gime fight against a taller opponent. . . . Feather-weight—J. Ward (Ashburton), Sst 71b, drew ".vith W. Mitchell (Christchurch), Sst 101b. in a willing and interesting bout, the best of the amateur contests. Welter-weight—M. Vessey (Ashburton), lOst 91b, beat C. McKenzie (Methven), XQst 121b. The bout was marred by too much clinching.
