SURF LIFE-SAVING
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Two recommendations for the improvement of surf life-saving in the Dominion included in the report of the manager of the New Zealand team to visit Australia (Mr H. S. Feast) were that march past teams should where possible consist of 20 members, and that there should be more frequent competitions, especially surf races. He said that the reason for suggesting more surf races was that they were popular with the public and excellent training for competitions. It was apparent on the tour that competitors should be coached in the knack of wading through shallow water, swimming through breakers, and riding breakers. The report also stated that Australian methods could be adopted with advantage in New Zealand. The movements were physically easier to perform, with all unnecessary movements eliminated, thus conserving the energy of the team. If there were regular competitions between Australia and New Zealand it was essential that competitors should be able to study Australian methods.
ROYAL LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY (
A recommendation from the Auckland branch of the Royal Life-saving Society that Mr D. J. F. Langley, honorary secretary of the branch, be awarded the distinguished service medal of the society, was approved at a meeting of the Mew Zealand Council last evening. The recommendation will be sent to the central executive, London, for consideration next January. A letter was received from the Auckland branch stating that it could not support the proposal' that the New Zealand Council take over all New Zealand awards, and suggesting that a conference of branches, should discuss the mat-; ter soon. ,
