Landing at Lympne at 10.52 last night, the Australian airman, H. F. Broadbent, broke Miss Jean Batten’s solo record for the flight from Australia by 13 hours 54 minutes. Miss Batten’s record was made in October, 1937, her time being 5 days 18hr 15min. In lowering Miss Batten’s time, Broadbent has had his revenge and recaptured the record, which he held in April, 1937, with a flight of 6 days lOhr 55min. Broadbent took off from Darwin at 3 a.m. on April 17. having flown to that airport from Mascot aerodrome, Sydney, on, the previous day. Broadbent was greeted by a large crowd, which swarmed round the machine. He said he felt fine. His time was 5 days 4hr 21min, beating Miss Batten’s time by 13hr 54min. Broadbent has definitely decided against further record-breaking in single-engined light aeroplanes, which he considers too risky, but he wants to assail C. W. A. Scott and T. Campbell-Black’s EnglandDarwin flight record, provided he can obtain a specially built machine with a cruising speed of about 240 miles an hour.
