CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Gilbert Lees (Melbourne) is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs Charles Wood, Leinster road. Mrs James Reid' (Darfield) and Mrs G. H. Ridgen (Greendale) returned yesterday from Hanmer Springs.

Mrs A. A. Macfarlane (“Ngawiro, Rotherham), who has been visiting the Misses Newton, Merivale, has returned home.

Mrs G. Blakely (Waikan) will arrive in Christchurch to-morrow to spend a few weeks with her mother, Mrs G. Fleetwood, Leinster road. Miss June Midgley (Timaru) spent the week-end in Dunedin, Mrs L. J. Smith is the guest of Mrs Howard Cox. Otira.

Mrs J. Dryden Hall (Cashmere Hills) will leave next week to pay a short visit to her son and daugh-ter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Peter Hall, Hawarden.

Mrs C. K. Wilson (Pio Pio), who has been visiting Christchurch, has returned to the north. Mrs James Pow, Dominion president of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds, is visiting Christchurch. Yesterday she formed a branch of the guild in Christchurch, to-day she will go to Timaru, and to-morrow night she will leave for Wellington. She intends to visit Dunedin after Easter.

At the monthly meeting of St. David’s Ladies’ Guild, Mrs R. Hutton presided. An interesting talk on London was given by Miss McLean, and songs were sung by Mrs Drewett. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mcsdames Hay, McDon-. aid. Angus, McCoy, and Milne.

Mr and Mrs E. S. Baldwin, vicepresidents and foundation members of the Wellington Repertory Theatre, will leave to-morrow by the Rangitata for a trip to England. They were entertained this week by members of the committee of the society. Miss V. M. jGreig, who has been president of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women, will leave soon for an overseas tour. Miss C. M. Heine was elected president at the annual meeting of the branch this week.

Miss Mary Bond (Dunrobin, Southland) is the guest of Mrs P. A. Elworthy, Gordon’s Valley, Timaru, before leaving for England.

Mrs J. F. Drake, Dominion president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, who has been visitingi Mrs W. F. Parkinson, Kaituna Hbmestead, and Mrs H. A. Nutt, Ataahua, is now the guest of Mrs Colin West Eyreton. She will leave on Saturday for her home, Berwick, Otago.

Through the courtesy of Messrs Thomas and Drayton, members of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association Women’s Auxiliary visited the factory of the New Zealand Lace Web Company, Ltd., Addington, yesterday afternoon and were shown through the works. They were interested in springs of motor-cars, chesterfields, mattresses, and chairs being made, and noticed that for padding New Zealand wadding was found to be. mote satisfactory than the imported article. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs J. W. Thomas, who, with Mr Drayton, were thanked by the president, Mrs C. S. McCully, fcjr their hospitality, -

SERVICE IN FAR EAST NEW ZEALAND DOCTORS AND NURSES The Joint Council of the Order of St John ahd the New Zealand Red Cross Society has received a communication from Dr. Hector Tremewan. the second doctor to be appointed by the council for service in the Far East. His letter, received by air maxi, is dated March 17, • and was posted at Hone Kong. He was ready on that date to leave Hankow via Canton when a notice was received from Dr, Maxwell who is in charge of the medical personnel, advising him to wait a few days as Hankow was far too congested for anybody to do anything. Dr. Robert Grey, the first doctor to be sent, is working with the Chinese civilian population in the vicinity of Joint Council from the Hong, Kong and China District of the St. John Ambulance Association advising that Dr. Grey asked the association to locate several New Zealand nurses at the request of the New Zealand ■ Registered Nurses’ Association. An advertisement was inserted in the press, and Petty Officer Bale, of H.M.S. Adventure, who is a New Zealander, replied that he was in touch with the nurses, and all were well.
