PEAKS IN UPPER AWATERE

SEVERAL PARTIES WILL ATTEMPT ASCENT EXPEDITIONS IN EASTER HOLIDAYS r.THB PRESS Special Service.] BLENHEIM, April 6. Peaks in the Upper Awatere district will receive the attention of mountaineers .during the Easter holidays. Parties will come to Blenheim from both Christchurch and Wellington to undertake their ascent, as the highest mountain in New Zealand outside the Southern Alps. Mount Tapuaenuku, presents a challenge which is usually taken up by several expeditions annually. On this occasion probably more than a dozen climbers will have -the 9460 foot peak as their objective. Six members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club will arrive on April 14, and together with several members of the Marlborough Tramping Club, will set off into the Awatere district to undertake the ascent of Mount Tapuaenuku, Mount Alarm, and, if time permits, possibly one or two other peaks nearby. About five days will be spent in the area. Wellington mountaineers . will be represented by a party of about the same number, which will arrive on Thursday night’s boat. They have adopted a similar programme, and there is a possibility that the two expeditions will join up and attempt the climbs together. Another party, comprising Mr H. K. Douglas, of Christchurch, president of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, and Mr A. E. Brockett, of Blenheim, and his son, will attempt to scale Mount Alarm, which is the sister peak of Mount Tapuaenuku.
