INCREASE OF £157,490 MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN CENTRAL AREAS MONTHLY AND YEARLY RETURNS

Though 94 fewer building permits were issued by the Christchurch City Council for the year ending March 31, as compared with the previous year, the value of them was greater by £ 157,490. These facts are shown in the returns issued by the City Engineer, Mr A. R. Galbraith, last evening. In the inner central area the value of the permits issued has increased from £105.497 to £258,866, approximately 150 per cent., and in the outer central area the figures have risen from £68,465 to £109,021. These, however, are the only wards to show an increase, • fallings off occurring in the St. Albans, Sydenham, Linwood, Spreydon, and Woolston wards. The total value of permits issued last year was £688,498, and in the previous year £531,008. The numbers of permits respectively are 1069 and 1163. , , The returns for March, however, show a drop in value, though an increase in numbers. The lower value is attributable almost in its entirety to the falling off in the inner central area. Last month the value of permits issued for this ward was only £5920, as against £26,395 in the corresponding month last year. The only other large variation in any ward is in the Spreydon area, where last month the value of the permits was £9622, as against £3128 in March, 1937. Detailed returns are;— March, 1938 Value.
