RESTRICTIONS ON PARKING

ENFORCEMENT BY CITY COUNCIL

PREPARATIONS BY TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT

The traffic department of the City Council has begun the erection of signs in main city streets to indicate new parking restrictions. Many motorists will be affected by the council’s decision to impose a 10 minutes’ limit on parking in the business sections of Colombo and High streets between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m., and already inspectors are keeping a close watch to ensure that this restriction is observed. Warnings have been given to about 100 motorists, but next week, according to the Chief Traffic Inspector (Mr J. Bruorton), stronger action will be taken against those who do not observe the by-law. Special attention is also being given to ensure that motorists do not park their cars in prohibited areas near dance halls. Notice boards to indicate the prohibited areas are to be erected to-day, and when all these signs have been erected there should, in Mr Bruorton’s opinion, be no excuse for the motorist who parks in the restricted area, for on these signs the extent of the restriction will be clearly set out. The restricted areas near city dance halls have been decreased, and this, said Mr Bruorton yesterday, would allow the inspectors to maintain a more effective watch. Mr Bruorton explained that the restricted area near the Winter Garden and Ridgley Hall was Armagh street from Manchester street to Madras street. In no circumstances would cars be allowed to park there during the period from half an hour before a dance began to a quarter of an hour after it ended. This time restriction would also apply to Jellicoe Hall and Cale-donian-Hall. Outlining the restriction attached to parking near Jellicoe Hall, Mr Bruorton said that prohibited areas were Gloucester and Armagh streets from Durham to Montreal streets. The prohibited areas near the Caledonian Hall were Kilmore street, from Colombo to Manchester streets, and Cambridge terrace, from Kilmore street to a point 330 ft west of Manchester street.
