SEWERS ON HOUSE PROPERTIES
REQUEST TO DRAINAGE
BOARD
BIG STATE HOUSING SCHEME
AT RICCARTON
A request for the location of sewers on house properties instead of in streets, in the area of building sections which the Ministry for Housing proposes to open up in the Riccarton district, was placed before the Christchurch Drainage Board at its meeting last evening.
The request was referred to the works committee with power to act.
In its letter, the department said it had in view the development of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s block of about 78 acres at Riccarton. and its immediate objective was to provide roadlng access as soon as possible. As this would probably take nine to 10 months if the sewers were in the streets, the department asked the board to consider a scheme of drainage in which the sewers were at the back of houses. This system, said the letter, had been adopted in a number of towns in the Dominion with the approval of the drainage authority. In such cases, the department gave an easement to the authority over the line of the drains.
The department has prepared a plan for the lay-out of the area on which from 250 and 300 houses will eventually be built. The area is bounded by Riccarton. Wharanui, and" Blenheim roads and Wainui street. Six aert* are set aside lor reserves.
