ANNUAL AMURI SHOW

EXCELLENT DISPLAYS OF SHEEP

FULL LIST OF AWARDS

The twenty-ninth annual show of the Amur! Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at the grounds of Mr T. Northcote, ’’Highfield," Waiau, yesterday. In the morning light rain fell, but cleared later in the day. Nevertheless a large crowd attended in the afternoon, and with an excellent number of entries the success of the show was assured.

A strong committee headed by the preFerguson, and the secretary, Mr G. Powis, worked hard to make the show the best on record. In the sheep classes Corriedales were strongly represented, the hoggets being a tme type. D. Sidey, J. L. Macfarlane, and w. Anderson exhibited successfully in this class, Sidey taking the championship for both ram and ewe.

In the Southdown class Mrs J. D. MadeIcy . and J. L. Macfarlane had large exhibits, the Palmside Cup for champion Southdown ram going to Macfarlane. Mrs Madeley gained the championship for ewes and one-shear rams.

Entries were also large in the merino and half bred classes. N. Rutherford figured prominently with his exhibits 'in these classes. The whole display of sheep was excellent and typical of the pick of the Amur! flocks. The judge, Mr J. Little, said that the champion Corriedale ewe was well up to metropolitan standard.

The show of horses was also well above that of previous years, the champion two-year-old male, Mr L. Ferguson’s Scotland’s Fame, being an outstanding animal. Cobs and ponies were about twice as strong as last year, and competition in the pony classes was extremely keen. The exhibits in the hall were a fine display, home products of all descriptions and the work of the schools of the district comparing very favourably with that of previous shows. The North Canterbury Highland Pipe Band was in attendance, leading the parade of prize winners in the afternoon. The pipers also played music for the Highland dancing competitions. The five champion horses were decorated with the champion ribbons, by Mrs A. G. Creed, who has been assistant secretary of the association for 14 years. Mr Ferguson, president, spoke over the loudspeaker at the conclusion of the afternoon and introduced the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, M.P., who was among those present during the day. Details of the entries in each section, with the figures for last year in parenthesis, were:—Draughts 56 (32), hackneys 86 (75), cobs and ponies 80 (55), cattle 7 (6). sheep 207 (138), fat sheep 35 (20), dogs 46 (30). cookery 227 (206), home industries 114 (71), needlework 153 (122), photographic and art 45 (25), seeds 87 (30), roots- and potatoes 154 (81.), vegetables 237 (176), fruit 52 (63), flowers 114 (105), schoolwork 211 (66), competitions 57, field competitions 5.
