Rail-cars to run on,.the Wellington-Palmers-ton North-Wanganui-New Plymouth night service are under construction at the Hutt railway workshops. Because of difficulty in obtaining materials, particularly steel, the construction of rail-cars is more than a year behind schedule. At the workshops six of the new standard type of rail-cars are in various stages of construction, and the first to be completed is to be ready for its trial run toward the end of April. The new rail-cars are to incorporate many radical changes from the design of those already in use, but these changes have not been made because of any weaknesses in the present cars. It is the department’s intention to place the cars in commission on every important section of its system throughout both islands.

At present they are a distinct menace to native birds, which seem to be less numerous in the yalley than they were a few years ago.
