P.W.D. WORK ON CONTRACT

TO THE EDITOR 09 THE PRESS. Sir, —If men are called scroungers or loafers on public works, it is not the men’s fault in every case but that of the system. I have worked on two small contracts and never received the full amount which I was to receive under the contract. We made inquiries through proper channels, and they could not help us in any way.

Even the truck which we used is 2 7-9 yards and we are paid for 2& yards. We lose 15 per cent, on a load. Therelore they seem to pay what they like, not what we earn.—Yours, etc., FAIR PLAY.

March 19, 1938. [When this letter was referred to the Public Works Department, the chief clerk stated that as “Fair Play” did not give any details of the place at which he was working he could not make any comment, but suggested that “Fair Play” should refer the matter, giving full particulars, to the District Engineer or to the union to which he belongs - .!
