A MUNICIPAL APPOINTMENT
- TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Some months back, applications were called for the position of caretaker of the abattoirs, and although the City Council had employees with six years or more service, fully con% versant with the duties, an outsider was appointed on trial. After three months’ service the appointment was terminated. Such an experience would have satisfied any ordinary employer and would have induced him to consider his own staff, but apparently this did not occur to the Christchurch City Council, and without advertising the
position it has again filled the position with an outsider. As one with a knowledge of abattoir requirements, I consider this a reflection on capable men of'long service.— Yours, etc., BUTCHER.
March 18, 1938. [When this letter was shown to the chairman of the committee dealing with abattoirs he said: “When the position was advertised, seven of the applicants were chosen for a personal interview before the abattoirs committee. The selection of the one who was on probation for three months was not recommended by the abattoirs management, so his position was made vacant The committee then interviewed the other six applicants, and made another se’~~ s on. Members of the abattoirs i were able to apply, which some c., . but the" committee chose a man whom they consider the best selection.”]
